“You mean there’s more to life than martial arts and nature?"
Shawn may be quiet, but he’s confident in what he does. This is best reflected in how he moves: he relaxes, his shoulders forward. He’s skinny, lanky, and his height only makes him look even more stretched out – he looks like a strong wind could knock him over, and the baggy jeans and hoodies that he often wear doesn’t detract from this – though the few times he’s seen outside of a hoodie it’s obvious there’s corded muscle hidden away within. He always seems to have some sort of scruff going on.

The First Change
“So, Wizard totally told me this story which just shows how much of a badass Shawn is. It’s about my mom – yeah, look, I know, but before all the bad things there was good – and it’s about her, but more importantly, it’s about Heartseeker. So, way back when, my mom got stuck with Aoife who was about to pop in Philadelphia. There was a pack there at the time, the Not Amish, and they said they’d help get Aoife transitioned safely if and only if they got to keep her, but Aoife was a cousin to Irish Red and to Boss, and so my mom knew that couldn’t happen. Aoife was causing problems, and it was nearing the crescent moon which Ehawee – that’s my mom – knew was when she was going to change, and mom had no idea what to do. As she was entering a state of panic, there was a knock on the hotel room door where they were standing.”
“Mom opened the door to a tall, thin uratha who said he could help. Now, mom thought this guy was Pure at first, but he said he was a Bone Shadow, and spoke of the wise Orenda of the Niagara Falls pack. This guy was Shawn, and he just took immediate control of the situation. He told Aoife to either be quiet or he’d kill her, and she listened. He had mom get ready, and he led the two of them to a locus, thwacking Aoife any time she acted up which – y’know – since she was near her change was basically every five seconds. We all know how that is.”
“So, Shawn pathfinds them across the locus and once they were in the Hisil, he summons a spirit known as the Hungry Wolf. He forces the spirit – an ensih – to submit to siskur-dah. Right then, Aoife, agitated by the feel of the shadow, agitated by every inconvenience, feels her wolf spirit overtake her for the first time and death rages. Shawn steps out of the way and she throws herself on this spirit which equally throws itself on her seeing her as the one without any brands on her. Once they’d mutually weakened one another, Shawn cut down Aoife, and then held the spirit down so that he and my mom could sup on essence before he discorporated the spirit. And it was through him that Aoife – Wizard, as she’s known now – was able to first change under protected conditions so that she could safely be brought home to her pack.”
“There’s a mighty zealot of an Izidakh known to many of you as Lumberjack.” To the side, someone sings The Monty Python Lumberjack Song . “Exactly right. Garrett – his true name – has shown up many times in Heartseeker’s life, and each time the two have found themselves in a duel.”
“Now, the first time, it was over destroying a malicious spirit that had killed several uratha including at least one urdaga. Garrett didn’t think destroying it was necessary. He thought that with good chiminage and a proper deal, the spirit could be coerced into working with the uratha. Heartseeker knew it would not work. They sparred to see whose decision would be gone with – or, well, in a manner of speaking. They were in our territory then, and we supported Heartseeker. But – anyway, they sparred. Heartseeker’s spear versus Garrett’s ax – and with three movements,” she mimics them then. The first she swings up. “One, a block to the ax.” The second she twists and swings sideways. “The second, throwing the ax aside.” And then she mimics jabbing it forward. “The third, a stab straight into the gut. Heartseeker brought Garrett down. “
“The second time was one I actually witnessed. Heartseeker did not have his staff – as I had it at the time – and it was a mighty battle versus a pure pack. I and Jacy were up against one werewolf because, as an uragarum at the time, I needed the help. Galen faced off versus the alpha. Heartseeker was once more up against Garrett. Garrett however had help in another Izidakh circling and chomping at Shawn from behind, and Shawn was having to use his tooth and claw which is – unfortunately – the weaker of his fighting abilities. However, despite that, by the end of the battle, Lumberjack turned tail and ran succumbing once more to Heartseeker’s superiorirty.”
“Let it be said that Shawn is wise. We all know that. But his Glory in battle should be admired as well. I hope should Garrett ever show his face again he knows who will bring him down.”
- Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd
“Forget your lust, for the rich man’s gold
All that you need, is in your soul,
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.
And be a simple, kind of man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man.
Oh, won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?”
- My Boy Builds Coffins by Florence + the Machine
“My boy builds coffins for better or worse
Some say its a blessing, some say its a curse
He fits them together in sunshine or rain
Each one is unique, no two are the same
My boy builds coffins and I think it’s a shame
That when each one’s been made, he can’t see it again
He crafts everyone with love and with care
Then it’s thrown in the ground, it just isn’t fair.
My boy builds coffins he makes them all day
But it’s not just for work and it isn’t for play
He’s made one for himself, one for me too
One of these days he’ll make one for you.”

- “Quiet competence is extremely underrated.” — Galen Summers
- “It’s easy to forget Heartseeker’s even there sometimes. But there’s never been a time when I’ve said to myself, “Where the fuck is Shawn?” and he hasn’t been there." — Jacy Carlson
- “He’s probably the smartest person in his pack. I wish he’d speak up more.” — Aoife McCullen
- “He’s so quiet that for the longest time he was super creepy. Which is weird – my sister has always been super quiet but I never thought she was creepy. Turns out he only says something when there’s something to add to it.” — Eliza LaValle
- “My mate.” — Eden LaValle
Mr. Quiet Man. I didn’t think he had a tongue at first, because he’d just been staring blankly at me the whole time Galen talked, and then he spoke. Also I ruined his silence a few days later and he looked frustrated. I mean, he seemed okay, helped me get my luck spirit out of me and put him into a talisman thingy, and even though he was grumpy he still answered my questions. Sort of. Yeeeeaaah…I’m pretty sure he hates me.” — Felicity Mayweather
- “It’s only been a little while, but my opinion has turned around. Shawn is incredibly nice and doesn’t hate me. He’s a great teacher – like, sure, he probably wouldn’t be your best bet for kids, but for me? So far so good. I’m really grateful to him.” — Fliss
