Jacy Carlson

“I’m not a smartass. I’m a dumbass. That’s the fucking opposite.”

Jacy is taller than average, well-muscled and scarred. Her hair ranges from dark brown to black, though now and again her roots show that she’s actually a natural red-head – she just seems to hate that she is. Jacy is vulgar, crude, and doesn’t give a fuck about you. Oh sure, she cares about some people, but no, not you in particular. She’s constantly looking for a fight, and she’s got a huge chip on her shoulder, of someone who needs to prove something and who has constantly failed to do just that – though ever since getting her new deedname she seems to have chilled a teensy little bit. She almost always dresses in sports wear – baggy shorts, tanktops, that sort of thing.

Twice-Told Tales

“As I’m the one who deednamed my best bud, I get to tell the story. Some backstory: I was an uragarum. I had a quest for redemption I had to do for Luna and was claimed by a ralunim. The most relevant part, however, is that I was on the last devil I had to kill to be redeemed. The devil was a powerful Tzuumfin who was hiding right smack dab in the middle of Anshega territory in the Netherlands. I was terrified of going alone. I’m not afraid to admit that – I was shaking and nervous about what I’d find there. Jacy sensed it. She didn’t judge me for it – no, she just immediately said she was going with me, no one could say otherwise, even though it would be far more dangerous for her than me.”

“I soon realize that the Ivory Claw is up at the top of a hotel, and go charging up. I’m met on the penultimate floor by an incredibly powerful spirit known as the Dark Lady – yep, that’s the one, the servant of Pseulak. She slammed into me and attacked me. Jacy leapt forward and grabbed ahold of her, screaming at me to go and get Maxine – so I did, leaving the sounds of the struggle and the fight behind me.”

“I don’t know what happened during that fight Jacy was in, but I do know what happened when I reached Maxine’s bedroom. She was waiting. She was prepared. She’d found out that my ralunim that was claiming me, had two bans. The first: that once in a fight, she could never leave it. And the second, if a woman was pregnant, her belly swollen like when Luna waxed toward full, she could not harm her. Maxine used these to her advantage, pulling me into a battle I could then not hope to finish because she was pregnant.”

“I took blow after blow. I’d lost a lot of blood. I feared losing my own child. I took another blow, certain I was going to die when the door exploded open. There was my hero – Jacy. Battered, broken, but having successfully discorporated the Dark Lady on her own, she wavered at the door. She saw what was going on and she flung a knife straight into Maxine’s stomach. The pregnancy was terminated. I felt – it was like a weight lifting off my shoulders. I could fight then – and I did. But it was Jacy who allowed me to do it – she was the fire that kept me lit in the dark, and she was a shock of flame that roared through the darkness. Thus, her deedname: Blaze.”

“WEEEELLLLLLL, Jacy and I used to haaaate each other. Like, she called me Prom Queen and I called her Bitchface. It was so bad that Galen was maybe not going to let me into the pack because we couldn’t get along.”

“So, one day, Jacy gets the bad news that her grandad had died and she needed to go to North Carolina for the funeral and viewing. Now, at the time, my sister was on a crusade for Luna, and had a weird prophetic dreamy thinger from some cahalunim that told her I was supposed to go with, so everyone else in the pack urged me to go. So off we went, two stubborn idiots who hated each other. Now, there was some action along the way where Jacy played an action hero and fought a powerful spirit while I got the herd away from the scene. But that part isn’t why I’m telling this story.”

“ We were playing pool and sniping at each other and I was certain we’d never get along. I bent to take my shot and a woman tapped me on my shoulder. I turned. ‘Maxine van Niekirk sends her regards,’ the woman said and – boom a gleam of silver. Before I even had time to think or react, Jacy shoved me out of the way. I heard the wet THUMP as the silver went straight into Jacy’s chest.”

“There was no time to grab the woman – I had to get Jacy back to New York so that Eden could safely get the silver out of her chest. The worst part? That was no ordinary silver – it was fetish silver, so it started wiggling its way slowly but surely toward Blaze’s heart. People will talk all day about Jacy in the rumor mill – but to all of ‘em, I say FUCK OFF because Jacy has honor. I won’t say she and I aren’t stubborn – we’re the most stubborn duo yo’ll meet – but I have to say that she’s a good stubborn. I’m glad to have her as a friend and a packmate. She’s incredible”

“Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.
Wear your grudge like a crown. Desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. And we’re sinking deeper.
Defining, confining, controlling, and we’re sinking deeper.

“My black eye casts no shadow
Your red eye sees no blame
Your slaps don’t stick
Your kicks don’t hit
So we remain the same
Blood sticks, sweat drips
Break the lock if it don’t fit
A kick in the teeth is good for some
A kiss with a fist is better than none.”

“Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?”
